Galileo thermometers are designed primarily of a sealed glass cylinder, which contains a clear liquid substance. Sometimes the liquid is colored for an overall effect that is more pleasing to the eye.

Using scientific principle of buoyancy (or resilience) is how Galileo thermometers function. The notion of buoyancy determines whether objects will float or sink. Basically, if the weights of Galileo thermometers differ—even by a slight amount, the least dense part of the liquid is at the top and most dense part of the liquid is at the bottom of the thermometer, together they form a scale for measuring the temperature.
