Why
would you want an outdoor thermometer? There are multiple reasons.
Here are just a few:
• If you have your own outdoor thermometer, you can play
“weather forecaster” – you can tell the temperature
before you get the newspaper or turn on the news.
• Adding an outdoor thermometer to your yard is like adding
a piece of useful garden décor – there are some very
attractive outdoor thermometers available.
• An outdoor thermometer makes a great gift – give
an outdoor thermometer to someone who has everything. Give one
to someone whom you don’t know very well (or as a housewarming
present…). An outdoor thermometer is a simple gift, but
it is one that you can be sure will be appreciated.
There are multiple types of outdoor thermometers. Here are a few:
• Indoor/outdoor thermometer – One of these outdoor
thermometers can actually be read from the indoors. Most indoor/outdoor
thermometers have some sort of probe or wireless device that is
set outside, but the temperature display is kept inside. In this
way, you can simply look at your indoor display to find out the
temperature of the outdoors. Many indoor/outdoor thermometers
also display the time, indoor temperature, and other weather features,
like humidity.
• Large display outdoor thermometers – These thermometers
can also be read from indoors, but the display is still outdoors.
Large display outdoor thermometers are excellent for anyone with
poor eyesight. The large numbers make it easy to tell the outside
temperature with one of these thermometers.
• Outdoor thermometers with suction cups – Again,
these outdoor thermometers can be read from indoors. Why step
outside to find that it is freezing cold when you could just check
your outdoor thermometer and save yourself the trouble (and coldness)?
Outdoor thermometers with suction cups make it easy to find out
outdoor temperatures without leaving your home – just suction
the thermometer to your home window. The suction cups are generally
on the front of the thermometer, so the display shows through
the window, not in the opposite direction.
• Bimetal outdoor thermometer – This type of outdoor
thermometer could include any of the above types of thermometers…
basically, a bimetal outdoor thermometer tells the temperature
by using the relationship and difference of two different types
of metals as they expand at different rates as they warm and cool.
Most commonly, bimetal thermometers use copper and iron.
• Digital outdoor thermometer – Digital outdoor thermometers
are a newer development than bimetal ones. People like these because
they generally have easy-to-read LCD screens. They are also often
quite accurate to the a 10th of a degree. Of course, one potential
downside of digital outdoor thermometers is that many require
batteries (bimetal ones do not). But there are solar powered outdoor
thermometers!
